Smith River, California

Thursday – June 28, 2012

For the first time since leaving home we slept in a little this morning so our start was a bit later. We drove less than three hours today. At this rate we won’t get to Canada until September.

We stopped at Klamath, Ca. at the Trees of Mystery. The Trail of Tall Tales is devoted to the folklore of Paul Bunyan and his unique adventures depicted in giant redwood carvings done with a chainsaw.

We started on foot up the one mile trail through the Redwood forest but soon realized the walk would be too much for me so we turned around and took the shuttle up to the tram. Dogs were welcome so we had Daisy with us. The Skytrail is a 7 to 9 minute ride in an enclosed gondola through the redwood forest to Ted’s Ridge. At Ted’s Ridge there is a large observation deck which offered spectacular views of the Klamath back country to the east and stunning views over Hidden Beach and the Pacific Ocean to the west. This was our outing for the day which was thoroughly enjoyable, affordable and didn’t take more than an hour.

After our adventure we drove to Smith River where we decided to stop for the night. We are once more staying in the parking lot of an Indian Casino. We are still in California but getting ever so much closer to Oregon. Perhaps tomorrow.
