Woodburn Company Stores and Portland

Monday – July 16, 2012

We went to the Woodburn Outlets in Woodburn, Oregon today. Wow! Oregon only has two outlet centers and they are both great. I had never been to the one in Woodburn before. It’s now my favorite. The petunias are wonderful. We left there about noon time and made our way to Portland where we will be staying for two nights. We had several things we wanted to do in our short stay in Portland so we set out to do one of them late in the afternoon. That was a mistake as we got into terrible traffic coming home and we were tired and hungry. We went to Powell’s new and used book store. It’s one of our favorite places to go in Portland.

Sunday - July 15, 2012

It was great to get back on the road after seven days in the same place without WiFi or Sprint coverage. On the way out of Lincoln City we stopped at the glass factory and pickup our bowl and stopped at the Farmers Market to buy cinnamon rolls and bread. After about an hour on the road we stopped at Spirit Mountain Casino the best ever Indian Casino with everything imaginable including a shuttle from the casino to the very large paved and lined RV parking lot. Then on to see the very large Spruce Goose at Evergreen Museum and an IMAX film on the Alps. There was a water park at the museum that included slides from a 747 airplane mounted on top of a building.

This was our last day at Chinook Bend. It has been a slow, easy and restful seven days. Bill made an appointment for early this afternoon to get instruction in blowing glass. When we were in Norway we went to a huge factory that blew glass and Bill was fascination with the process. When we passed the shop near where we’re staying that offered lessons he was thrilled. He enjoyed the class immensely. Tomorrow on the way out of town we will pick up the bowl that he made. How nice it will be to have that little bowl sitting on a table and remembering this day.

Daisy has become what I call “campground gray” so I just finished giving her a bath. Hopefully we are done being on dirt although Daisy thoroughly enjoyed getting dirty.

We leave tomorrow morning. Bill has wanted to see the Spruce Goose. It is located a mere 55 miles from here. It was located in Long Beach, California for many years when we lived in Southern California however we never saw it when we lived so close.

Friday – July 13, 2012

We didn’t do too much today although we did drive down to the beach to see if we could find an interesting piece of driftwood that would not be too heavy for Bill to carry back to the car. To our surprise, Bill found one. It was pretty difficult carrying it all the way back to the car but he managed and I know we will enjoy looking at it in our yard and remembering where it came from.

Unfortunately the berries were not ripe yet but we did find a sea food store that sold crab cocktail.

Wednesday – July 11, 2012

The events of our day unfolded a little differently than we had expected. We had planned on going into town early (so that Bill could get to his bakery while they still had cinnamon rolls), however, after being up for an hour or so he went back to bed for another little rest. We ended up leaving here near
10:00 a.m. Our first stop was to the Barking Dog Organic Farm which looked at lot like Robbie’s farm. It was closed. Our second stop was to the bakery. Unfortunately, they had already sold out all their cinnamon rolls. Our third stop was to the outlet mall. Bill brought his laptop with him so that we could hook up to the Internet and pay some bills. His battery wore down before he could complete the job. We were a little frazzled and tired by then so we had lunch which we enjoyed, however, Bill had a problem digesting it. What is going on today? After lunch we did a little more shopping which I enjoyed thoroughly. Bill, I think, was just being a good sport. One stop at the outlet mall is usually his limit.

We’re back in the motor home now. Bill recharged the battery on his laptop and took it to the office to finish paying the bills. When he returned he poured us our now nightly glass of wine. Unfortunately for me, it was the last of the bottle that I have so enjoyed. Sad me. It’s a wine you cannot buy at the store and it is the only wine I’ve ever liked. We’re faced with a dilemma – do we need to make a return trip to Napa on the way home?

Daisy didn’t get her walk today. It was an odd sort of day. It took on a life of its own.

Tuesday – July 10, 2012

It was a beautiful day today. The sun was shining and yet it remained cool. This, we decided, would be the day we would go for a boat ride down the Siletz River, however, that happened later in the afternoon. In the morning we went for our walk on the path facing the Siletz River. Daisy walked the entire way with us and loved every minute of her adventure. The path ended where the doggie trail began so we continued walking that way until we arrived back at the motor home. It was about a half mile walk. Daisy and I both did well but we were glad to be home.

After lunch we decided it was time to go for a motor boat ride. We took Daisy with us. She was as good as gold in the boat. She sat on my lap for most of the hour long trip. When she wasn’t on my lap she was laying on my coat in the bottom of the boat. The scenery was just beautiful and we were the only ones on the river. Our timing was perfect!

Bill has been barbecuing every night we’ve been here and tonight we will are looking forward to a steak dinner. The days pass swiftly. It’s hard to believe that we’ve already been here three days.
